Board member, May Barger grew up understanding the benefits of having a family fund at the Community Foundation. Her mother, Becky Carter, served as the first full-time volunteer Executive Director from 1987 to 1994, and she continued to serve on the board for several terms afterwards. In 2001, Becky Carter was honored as the recipient of the Allen H. Sims Award. In 1990, May’s father, Bynum Carter, was one of four who were the first Allen H. Sims Award recipients. He also established one of the first family funds at the Foundation in 1985 and a second fund in 1986 for his business, A.B. Carter. May has continued the legacy of support for the Community Foundation as one of the co-founders of “Run for the Money,” an event now in its 16th year which has raised more than $18 million for local non-profits. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Foundation and participates on the Grants Committee. May and her husband, Carroll, foster the legacy of giving in their children, Josie and Ben. In high school, both participated in the Foundation’s Teens Changing Gaston County which teaches teens not only the importance of giving but how to give.

“In Luke 12:14 it says "to whom much is given, much will be required" and I try to live with this in mind. Having a fund at the Community Foundation makes it so easy.”
